In early November, I will leave Neptune Beach in Jacksonville and begin the 3,000(ish) mile walk to the Pacific in San Diego.
I like to play “connect the dots” on my walks. I typically pick a group of cities or geographic points of interest that I would like to visit along the way. Then, I take into account advice from locals, fellow walkers, my gut, and Google Street View in order to select the most logical roads that will “connect the dots” in the safest possible manor.
I usually decide on which roads to take about a week in advance, which gives me an opportunity to map out water, grocery, and camping spots. The beauty of a trip like this is its fluidity. I may be planning on walking Road A starting in three days, but end up on Road B based off the opinions of locals. Flexibility it key!
That being said, the “dots” for my trip are as follows…
Jacksonville! Tallahassee, FL; Panama City, FL; Pensacola, FL; Mobile, AL; Biloxi, MS; New Orleans, LA (Christmas?); Houston, TX; San Antonio, TX; Del Rio, TX; El Paso, TX; Rodeo, NM; Tucson, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; Blythe, CA; San Diego (Late March 2021)!
I will update my whereabouts through blog posts, Facebook, and Instagram (been_walkin). If you know anyone that may be willing to let a smelly, bearded walker set up his tent in their backyard for a night or two along my route, please reach out!
P.S. I will do yard work, heavy lifting, or dishes for a camping spot or lodging!
